Have You Wrapped Your Brain Around Your Kids Leaving One Day?

Hello Fellow Good Dads,

Today I am dropping child 3 of the 4 kid crew off in Leavenworth, KS. No not for a military prison bid but to begin her first year of college. She has a scholarship to play flag football and wants to become a Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer when school is over.

I’m PROUD of her but I don’t know if I’m happy, sad, or what….. Mainly happy but for her and this new step of life she’s taking.

It’s a little surreal honestly.

I mean, of course I knew they were going to grow up, complete school, and eventually leave the nest but I don’t know, my emotions are all over the place.

I was having a conversation with my wife and she put it perfectly. “When the kids were born I knew they would leave but I never stopped to consider how my life would change once they do“.

And with each departure our lives have changed. I already miss the awe and wonder my kids had because they didn’t know mom and I were just 2 humans who didn’t have the slightest clue on how to raise children and were just trying to figure it out. And some day if they choose they will be the naive parent not knowing what to do and figuring it out. But for now we get to watch them take life on partially alone trying to resist the urge to fix everything.

I know they need space to figure it out and we will work hard to give it as we transition to bumpers on a bowling lane. You get to roll your ball how ever you want and mom and I will help keep you from the gutter.

To my fellow dads; how have you handled your children growing up. What are some good tips to process getting closer to an empty nester?

🍻Cheers to a healthy transition as your kids grow up!
